Hervonden Stad

When I worked for the local council of the city of Groningen, Netherlands, in 1999, I was asked to write an article for their archaeological historical yearbook, Hervonden Stad. This yearbook is published every year to let the people of the city of Groningen know about the historical research that has been done in the city that year, informing them about the results.

The title of the yearbook translates as ‘a city found again’, which infers that through the research the old historical city of Groningen is uncovered from the past.

The article that I wrote for the 1999 issue of  Hervonden Stad, is called  ’De ondergewaardeerde Bruynzeeldeur opgewaardeerd’. It tells the story of the standardisation in sizes of doors, which started around 1920. This might seem a bit of a random subject, but at the time I was advising people on finding the right period materials to restore their old houses and I became rather an expert in doors.
